Knowledge & Understanding Strand

ACTDIK015- Investigate how digital systems use whole numbers as a basis for representing all types of data

  • recognising that digital systems represent all types of data using number codes that ultimately are patterns of 1s and 0s (called binary digits, which is why they are called digital systems)

Processes & Production Skills Strand

ACTDIP022- Manage the creation and communication of ideas and information including online collaborative projects, applying agreed ethical, social and technical protocols

  • using a range of communication tools to share ideas and information, for example participating in collaborative online environments

General Capabilities aligned with the Australian Curriclum

Numeracy - Building and developing mathematical knowledge and skills

ICT - Using various ICTs, including computer, video, website

Critical & Creative Thinking - Think broadly and deeply to understand digital systems.

Personal & Social Capabilities - Collaborating and working effectively with peers, making responsible decisions

Differentiation

Differentiation is considered and catered for throughout the unit plan with the aim to assist the learning process and maximise opportunities for student success (Churchill et al, 2011, p.226).

- Individual learning styles are met through the inclusion of a range of resources and activities that appeal to the verbal/linguistic (discussions), logical/mathematical (codes, patterning, calculating), visual/spatial (computer code, WebQuest), and interpersonal (class blog, paired work) learner.

- There are opportunities provided for small group, paired and whole class learning experiences, which allow for peer learning to occur.

For those students who do not wish to use the class blog, please ensure they have a peer member with whom they can share ideas and information with.

Assessment task - Students who need support, may verbalise their answers to teacher or teacher aide who will scribe for them.

TEACHERS

This resource has been designed to support the implementation of the Australian Curriculum:"Technologies.

This WebQuest involves students revisiting prior knowledge of data and digital systems, leading on to developing new knowledge of digital systems representing data using number codes that are patterns of 1s and 0s, known as binary digits.

In the assessment, students will demonstrate mastery of knowledge and skill where they solve a range of binary and denary conversions. Furthermore, students will be engaged in their learning as they decrypt binary codes to solve the secret message on the task page.

Students actively collaborate with their peers using the class blog site, sharing information and ideas ethically, whilst adhering to protocols.
